On Saturday, 30 May 2026, a Foster Care Appreciation Lunch was held for the foster parents of Badisa Trio Scottsdene. The event served as an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable role foster parents play in providing care, stability, and support to vulnerable children.
The programme commenced with a moment of recognition and remembrance for the foster parents who have passed away since the previous appreciation dinner held in 2024, namely Mr and Mrs Williams, Mrs Antonie, Mr Britz, and Mrs Jaftha. A moment of silence was observed in their honour, a candle was lit, and photographs of the deceased foster parents were displayed as a tribute to their lives and contributions to foster care.
Guests were entertained by Mr Elvino Horn, who provided a musical performance that contributed to the warm and celebratory atmosphere of the event.
The psychology students from Goldilocks and the Bears delivered an informative presentation on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The presentation provided an overview of the condition and offered practical guidance to foster parents on supporting children diagnosed with ADHD and effectively managing the challenges associated with the disorder.
Mrs Merlee Banies facilitated a couch discussion with Mr and Mrs Lewis, the foster parents of Zeke Cupido, who has been diagnosed with ADHD. The couple shared their personal experiences and highlighted strategies they have implemented to support Zeke. They encouraged fellow foster parents to remain actively involved in all aspects of a child’s life, including maintaining regular communication with social workers, collaborating with medical professionals, supporting educational development, and attending therapy sessions and other relevant appointments.
Ms Sarah Helena Roberts, Children’s Commissioner of the Western Cape, expressed her sincere appreciation to the foster parents and thanked them for their ongoing commitment, dedication, and willingness to provide a nurturing environment for children in foster care.
During the event, Mrs Hendricks, one of the foster parents, conveyed her gratitude to Mrs Roberts for the support and assistance she provided when Mrs Hendricks’ grandchildren were placed in her foster care following the tragic loss of their mother. Mrs Hendricks acknowledged the significant role that the support received played during a difficult period in her family’s life.
The Foster Care Appreciation Lunch was a meaningful occasion that not only recognised the dedication and sacrifices of foster parents but also provided valuable learning opportunities, encouragement, and support. The event reinforced the importance of collaboration and the vital contribution foster parents make in promoting the well-being and development of children in their care.
