There are moments in child protection work that remind us why perseverance and hope should never be abandoned.

For many years, two minor children lived without one of the most fundamental documents confirming their identity… Their birth certificates. Numerous social workers had previously attempted to facilitate the late registration of the children’s births. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful, as the necessary cooperation from the children’s biological mother could not be obtained at the time.

The social worker subsequently initiated the late birth registration process and proceeded with the necessary applications and arrangements despite not having the biological mother’s assistance. Although the process presented many obstacles and required considerable persistence, the matter continued to move forward in the best interests of the minor children, with the assistance of the maternal grandmother.

As the process progressed, a remarkable change occurred. The mother’s circumstances improved, and she began cooperating in the best interests of her children. By the final stages of the registration process, she was actively involved in the children’s lives and was able to provide the cooperation required to finalise the late birth registration.

Today, the children have officially received their birth certificates. What was once a seemingly impossible task has become a reality. These certificates represent far more than legal documents, they provide the children with an official identity, recognition before the law, and access to the rights and opportunities every child deserves.

This journey is also a powerful reminder that people can change. The mother’s progress demonstrates that, with time and support, positive transformation is possible. Equally, it reflects the importance of persistent social work intervention. Had the matter been abandoned after previous unsuccessful attempts, the children may still have been without legal recognition.

A reminder that sometimes, hope simply means refusing to give up.
